A
Story of Devotion and New Hope for an Abandoned Animal
Max was abandoned, in a shocking state, when his
owners moved house. He was brought in to FORA and looked as if he
had walked through a volcano. Through his pain and abuse, he still
wagged his tail and was so eager to please. His plight, published
in the local press, generated a huge response from people with
homemade remedies, to those who wanted to hunt and lynch his
previous owners. He received so much attention and love, with many
offers of homes, but we knew that his owners would have to be
super-special and we found them in Willem and Annatjie Cierenberg.
Annatjie being a registered nurse and Willem with never ending
patience, nursed Max back to health - and these photos are
testimony to their dedication and love. A story of courage and
triumph over adversity - we salute them and are privileged to have
played a part in Max's special story.

A
Tribute to our Animal Heroes
FAREWELL, DEAR SUNSHINE
"In Loving Memory of our dear Sunshine who passed
away on the 14th July 2007"
Whatever
news, good or bad, we have for this week will be overshadowed by
the death of our beloved "Sunshine". Our FORA mascot, our sergeant
Major, our grand old man and one of our best friends at the
shelter. Well known by all who read the Newsletter for his
comments and quotes. At the ripe old age of 17 and the recent
deterioration in his health, his passing was not unexpected and
most of us had said our farewells, but it was still a hard pill to
swallow. Sunshine was rescued by Merinda when she was still with
Claws under appalling conditions and brought to FORA four years
ago, just skin and bone. He was fed with a teaspoon (although his
recent girth belied that fact) and on his recovery was happy just
to eat and sit in the sun in the run outside his kennel. Breggie
eventually moved him to the front entrance where he roamed free
and stamped his authority on the shelter and kept everyone in
check with his deep, hoarse bark. He was soon joined by GSD cross
puppies Bonnie and Clyde and whenever they were out of control,
Sunshine would promptly sit on them until they calmed down. Gina,
the lovely L'Oreal highlighted girl who couldn't bear to share
with anyone joined them next and the family was complete. They are
clearly also heartbroken and searching every corner for their
mentor Sunshine Manor is eerily empty. The entrance now looks
different and very quite but we wish you adieu big boy and simply
say, "You are our Sunshine, our only Sunshine". Sleep well we know
you will be waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge keeping all our
departed souls in line. Sunshine we will never forget you.
